Introduction to electronic cigarettes

510 ecigarette displayAn electronic cigarette or "e-cigarette" is a battery-powered cigarette device that provides inhaled doses of nicotine by heating a nicotine solution, also called e-liquid, into a vapor. There is no spark or fire. In addition to nicotine delivery, the vapor also provides flavor and physical inhaled sensation like a real cigarette without any actual tobacco, smoke, or combustion.

An e-cigarette gives the appearance and feel of real smoking products like cigarettes, cigars, and pipes, providing a smoke like exhalable vapor and a light up tip when you drag on it. Electronic cigarettes are reusable with replaceable and refillable parts. A number of disposable electronic cigarettes have also been developed, but they are not very economical or practical.

Operation

On most older style models, when you dragged or puffed on the e-cigarette, air flow was detected by a sensor. That sensor activated the heating element. The newest model e-cigarettes use a manual switch for better durability and control. When the button is pressed, the heating element vaporizes the e-liquid (nicotine fluid) that is stored in the mouthpiece. The vapor produced is inhaled by the user. This feels and looks like a real cigarette. There is even an LED that lights up on the opposite end of the e-cigarette which is activated during your drag, and it lets you know that the e-cigarette is working. It also simulates the glow of a lit cigarette.

Cartridge (mouthpiece)

The cartridge is a small and disposable plastic cup that attaches to the end of the e-cigarette. This is the piece that you inhale from. This part contains a filter of absorbent material that is moistenedecigarette parts diagram with the e-liquid. It can be refilled with the e-liquid (nicotine fluid) or it can be replaced with a new prefilled cartridge.

Atomizer (heating element)

The atomizer is the part that turns the liquid in the mouthpiece to vapor so that it can be inhaled as "smoke". This component does not produce any fire or spark. The heating element does not burn the filter and no real smoke is inhaled. Instead of smoking, you are vaping.

Battery

Electronic cigarettes uses a lithium-ion rechargeable battery to power the atomizer. The life of the battery depends on the type and size, how often it’s used and how it’s stored. The battery is the largest component of the electronic cigarette.

Most older model e-cigarettes used an electronic airflow sensor which automatically activated the battery (drag activated). The newest models have a manual button on the side of the e-cigarette that the user presses while inhaling or dragging ecigarette chargers and adaptersproviding a more consistent and controllable vape.

 Chargers

There are many different battery chargers available. There are chargers that you can plug into the wall outlet, car lighter, and the USB on your computer. There are even carrying cases (PCC's) that have internal batteries and chargers so you can charge your e-cigarette on the go.
